Why Does the U.S. Army Ban Its Soldiers from Using TikTok?

09 January 2020

In the last two years, TikTok's popularity has increased rapidly, and TikTok has been downloaded more than 1.5 billion times. However, despite its success, this application apparently still has vulnerabilities that could impact its users. The Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States said that the app could pose national security concerns for American citizens and did not rule out the possibility that TikTok was being used to influence or monitor its users. The US Army has banned soldiers from using the TikTok app on government-owned phones, even calling TikTok a cyber threat.

Cybersecurity research company Check Point Research discovered a number of security vulnerabilities in the TikTok video application. The vulnerability makes it easier for hackers to display messages with links that appear to come from the TikTok application and redirect users to fake sites that resemble TikTok. Hackers can even take over user accounts, including uploading videos and accessing private videos. Check Point also discovered that users' personal data, including name and date of birth, could be retrieved via the official TikTok company website. Check Point has provided information about the vulnerability to TikTok's parent company since last November, and TikTok has been working to fix security vulnerabilities in the application. However, currently TikTok is still under investigation regarding violations of European privacy laws regarding the protection of minors and personal data.
