7 Tips to Protect Your Personal Data in Cyberspace

12 August 2019

It cannot be denied, cyberspace has become part of our daily lives. Starting from shopping, sending messages, playing on social media, and so on, everything is done online. All these activities are recorded and stored by different companies and services. Therefore, it is not surprising that in the past people still had secrets, but now they seem to have disappeared. Because, all aspects of modern society's life have now turned completely online.

To safeguard customers' personal data, companies and services have quite a heavy responsibility to store all their activities. But unfortunately, privacy is something that is not considered very important in Indonesia. This can be seen from the lack of internet users in Indonesia who care about the privacy policies implemented by companies and services.

Dony Koesmandarin, Territory Channel Manager Indonesia Kaspersky Lab SEA said that the public needs to know how to protect valuable data. "This not only applies to large organizations, but also every individual who uses devices connected to the internet on a regular basis," he said.

Moreover, recently many internet users feel that their privacy has been taken away, there has been information leakage, they have become victims of espionage, and so on. Crimes like this are also a strong reason why online privacy should be a concern.

Therefore, to avoid unwanted things, here are 7 tips from Kaspersky Lab to protect your personal data in cyberspace, as reported by Antara News.

1. If you have an account on a social network, then you need to check the account's security settings regularly.

2. Email is one of the most important services to secure. Especially if your email is connected to banking services and other important sites. If you want to log in on various dating sites or questionable services, it's best to create and use a second (even third or fourth) email address.

3. When uploading scans and photos in cyberspace, you need to be careful. Especially if what you upload are ID cards, tickets and billing documents. Sharing information about your whereabouts and itinerary online is a bad idea. Because cybercriminals can use this information to find out when your house is empty and commit robbery or steal personal data, such as banking credentials.

4. Don't use open WiFi networks. Maybe it looks safe, but you can't know for sure. To create a similar network, cybercriminals only need a laptop and a WiFi adapter. They can do this to intercept the logins and passwords of users, who try to connect to the internet through these fake networks.

5. Use a reliable password. If you use weak combinations consisting of letters only, then you are not protected at all.

6. Apart from protecting your personal data, also think about your children's privacy. Cyberbullying is not a trivial matter, because many children around the world have become victims and suffered from this.

7. When installing software for free, you will be offered to install various add-ons such as plugins, toolbars, and extensions. If you click ‘Next’ without reading the text in the installation window, you will automatically install the entire package, both necessary and unnecessary applications. These unnecessary applications can, for example, change the home page or search settings.

Phishing perpetrators also use this to send traps in the form of discount links or similar to dig up as much personal information as possible. Trend Micro USA read about this phenomenon during Black Friday last month. Many people are deceived because they are tempted by offers to shop at very cheap prices.
